Doctors Recommend New Migraine Treatment App

By Herbert Ong, Juva Co-Founder and CEO

I’m so pleased to share several exciting Juva Health company updates with you today.

After a year of incredibly hard work by our team of medical professionals and developers, our Juva for Migraine biofeedback app is now being used by more than 125 people as part of our new early access program, which we launched in August to collect user feedback in preparation for a full public release by early 2021.

Juva for Migraine uses your smartphone camera to capture your vital signs in real time.

The Juva for Migraine smartphone app, which lets users self-administer personalized biofeedback coaching similar to what’s offered in clinics, is being recommended by doctors to select patients at four leading U.S. headache clinics.

This is an extremely meaningful vote of confidence. We now have the support of nationally respected clinics and physicians, who've told us they are glad to have a scientifically proven non-drug treatment that’s so easy to offer to patients virtually, especially given the dramatic increase in telemedicine appointments during the pandemic.

We're also getting some media attention. We were included in an article about the latest developments in tech-driving migraine interventions in the October issue of Women’s Health Magazine, and our headache expert and Juva Co-Founder Dr. Dawn Buse, who guides patient treatments on our app, was quoted in a People Magazine article about how important it is for women with migraine to practice self-care — using relaxation apps such as ours.

Juva for Migraine Biofeedback Exercises

Juva for Migraine delivers biofeedback and relaxation coaching that trains users to transition their nervous system to a state of relaxation, helping to reduce migraine pain and frequency.

Our relaxation sessions include diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and visual imagery. As you practice these techniques, Juva uses your smartphone's camera as a biofeedback tool to display your vital signs so you know how activated or relaxed your nervous system is becoming.

We even make it fun with some interactive exercises, such as making a flower “bloom” or the sun set as you change biometrics such as your heart rate.

Juva: So You Can...

Early feedback from our users is positive. One user told us she loves that she doesn’t have to go to a doctor’s office and be hooked up to a computer to do biofeedback. Another, who is pregnant, says she’s using it to calm her Braxton-Hicks contractions in the middle of the night.

And another is now getting a better night’s sleep.

"I feel like it's helping when I get migraines at bedtime,” said early access user Jennifer G. “I don't have to take medicine. I get clusters every night or every other night. I've been able to wake up without a headache and not have to take migraine medicine in the middle of the night.”

It’s testimonials like these that inspire the Juva team.  In fact, empowering people in pain to reclaim their lives inspired our new motto, “So you can…”

Early Access participants say Juva for Migraine helps them get a better night's rest.

Whether “So you can...” means getting a full night of sleep, exercising, enjoying date night or reclaiming anything else that migraine has taken from your life, we believe that Juva for Migraine can give it back.

We look forward to making this app available to everyone later this fall, and we thank you for supporting our mission to change the future of migraine treatment and empower you to take control of your pain, health and well-being.

Interested in participating in our Early Access program? Please fill out this form and we'll be in touch.

Join Our Mission to Help People in Pain

Migraine treatment app CEO Herbert Ong

Juva Health CEO and Founder Herbert Ong

I grew up watching my mom deal with very painful migraine attacks. As a clinician  — I was previously a hospital pharmacy director — I had always hoped there would be new migraine treatments to treat this debilitating illness.

After founding two healthcare analytics software companies, I’m now following my passion to more directly impact patients’ lives as the CEO of Juva Health, a digital health company that will soon release a biofeedback app.

It’s our company’s mission to empower people to take control of their pain, health and well-being.

We’re going to focus first on migraine and chronic pain, but later versions of this app will treat stress and a variety of other conditions.

Why a Biofeedback App?

A few years back, as life would have it, I was researching non-drug migraine solutions when I stumbled upon a treatment modality called biofeedback. Biofeedback is a well-established and well-accepted treatment.  Hundreds of hospitals have biofeedback clinics. Hundreds of studies have proven that it is as effective as medication not only for migraine but for nine different health conditions.

In biofeedback therapy, a patient is attached to sensors that monitor bodily functions. Working with a professional, you learn to control these bodily functions — things like your heart rate, body temperature and muscle tension — to relieve and prevent symptoms of illness.

The problem is you have to visit a hospital or clinic, and you have to be hooked up to instruments and wires. It’s expensive and not always covered by insurance so it's not truly an option for most patients, especially people with migraine who may experience pain so severe they can’t even consider getting out of bed to go to a biofeedback clinic.

The good news is that the very technology that you may be reading this article on — your smartphone or tablet — is now advanced enough that it can replicate the same biofeedback treatment that for the past 30 years has only been offered in a clinic.

How Juva for Migraine Works

The Juva for Migraine app is special for several reasons:

  • *No doctor visits, wires or special equipment is required. You can practice biofeedback in any quiet space at your convenience.
  • It will be offered at a fraction of the cost of in-clinic biofeedback treatments.
  • It works well with medication therapies or as a drug-free option, for those who prefer that or for those who can’t take traditional migraine medications, for example, women who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding.
  • It uses your smartphone video camera and an optional finger temp device to record vital signs such as your heart rate, breathing rate and temperature. You can see these numbers on a relaxation meter so you can track your progress in real-time and learn to change those vital signs to help relieve your symptoms.
  •  It features guided biofeedback relaxation sessions designed by Dr. Dawn Buse, a nationally respected headache expert and researcher who has successfully administered these same therapy modules in her clinic to give patients relief.
  • Based on your individual metrics and progress through these 20-minute therapies, the app can help you custom design a program for your condition and goals.

Today we’re asking you to please join us in our mission to become the world’s most effective at-home treatment for migraine and other serious illnesses.

We’re currently testing our beta version of the app with migraine patients, and their feedback is overwhelmingly positive. It guides users into a deep state of relaxation that immediately increases their sense of comfort and well-being.

Now biofeedback therapy will be accessible to anyone — no more visits to clinics, no more instruments and wires and much at a much more affordable cost.

Please join our cause to help people improve their health. To show our appreciation for your early support, we will be offering early supporters discounted app membership rates, so sign up today to qualify.

Patient Calls Migraine App ‘Rejuvenating’

When Marie Stroh has a migraine it feels like someone is smashing her face against a brick wall with a two-by-four.

At one point she was experiencing 15 or more episodes a month, making her a regular in the ER where a cocktail of multiple drugs was the only way to find relief.

Although Botox injections have helped, ultimately there’s no end in sight. There’s no cure. Her condition — likely caused by muscular injuries she suffered in several accidents — is just a fact of life that the 33-year-old labor and delivery nurse and mom of a toddler has learned to accept.

While there are medications that can help, they have serious side effects that impair her ability to safely care for newborns at work or for her daughter Celeste, 3.

Biofeedback Treats Migraine

Thankfully, now Juva’s new smartphone app offering biofeedback therapy for migraine is giving Stroh new hope.

Stroh, one of a handful of patients participating in early testing, said she loves it and has been using it regularly.

“The app lets me take a step back from all the chaos and get back to my inner self,” she said. “ I was able to let thoughts drift away. I felt rejuvenated and better than I did this morning.”

The Juva for Migraine app uses new smartphone camera technology to measure a user’s heart and breathing rates. It also can track body temperature with the Bluetooth feature and a simple finger thermometer.

The user is then guided through breathing and relaxation exercises created by nationally renowned headache expert Dawn Buse, Juva’s Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder and a clinical psychologist and neurology professor.

App Can Provide Migraine Relief On-the-Go

But this isn’t a meditation app.  Stroh was seeing real-time feedback on how successful she was at altering her vital signs via a relaxation meter.

This is what biofeedback is. You can train your mind to control your body and watch your heart rate slow as you practice deep breathing. In the case of migraine, raising or lowering your temperature could help relieve or prevent symptoms, depending upon your individual situation.

Stroh likes the tracking feature, saying that when the 20-minute session ends she can measure her success.

She also likes the mobile nature of the app. Usually, biofeedback, a treatment founded 30 years ago, requires that a patient visit a hospital or clinic and be hooked up to wires and instruments. It's an expensive option that not all insurance plans cover.

Juva will offer patients the ability to practice biofeedback at home at their convenience at a fraction of the cost.

“It’s something you could easily do anywhere,” Stroh said. “I could probably do it on a break at work. It’s really easy. You don’t have to change clothes or go to a doctor’s office. You can do it anywhere you want.”
